Profile: Dawn Curie Thomas, DVM
A college career advisor once told Dawn Curie Thomas to forget about ever becoming a veterinarian. After all, he said, she was too old (27), she was the mother of two young children, and she was a woman. Obviously, she had no chance whatsoever to fulfill her childhood dream. Today, despite the odds and the advice, Dr. Thomas owns the Southern California Veterinary Hospital & Animal Skin Clinic in Los Angeles; has written a book called, "The 100 Most Common Questions That Pet Owners Ask the Vet," which has sold almost 50,000 copies nationwide in pet stores and is available in a Japanese-language edition; and is president of Veterinarian's Best, Inc., a Santa Barbara company that manufactures and distributes high-quality pet care products all over the world.

After earning a straight-A average in undergraduate school, Dr. Thomas received her doctorate of veterinary medicine in 1981 from the prestigious University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine. After a year of general practice, Dr. Thomas decided that her special area of interest was dermatology for dogs and cats, and soon she founded the Animal Skin Clinic in Los Angeles.

The Animal Skin Clinic was so popular that larger facilities were needed within a year. So, in 1984, Dr. Thomas purchased a long-established full-service veterinary hospital and merged the Animal Skin Clinic with the larger hospital. Over the next three years, the business of the newly created Southern California Veterinary Hospital & Animal Skin Clinic more than tripled.

For four years, Dr. Thomas also wrote pet health columns for the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Daily News. She was also a regular guest on the United Broadcasting Network (UBN), an affiliation of 365 radio stations across the United States.

After several years of practice, Dr. Thomas became very frustrated with the standard veterinary approach to treating skin problems in dogs and cats which typically includes the use of potentially dangerous steroids (cortisone) and harsh chemical dips or pesticidal shampoos. Instead, working with chemists for leading human cosmetic labs, she developed a line of all-natural shampoos, conditioners, topical sprays and a special food supplement that had dramatic results when used together for treating dogs and cats with a wide variety of skin problems.
